COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND–Thanks to the ongoing NCAA March Madness Tournament, a local student has learned that women do, in fact, also play basketball. “I was so bummed that our boys didn’t make the tournament, you know? But then my bro’s girlfriend said, ‘Hey, what about the women’s team?’ Did you guys know we had a women’s basketball team? It turns out they made the tournament,” said Brock Manleigh, a junior management major.

The University of Maryland has apparently had a varsity women’s basketball team since 1971, which has taken home several conference titles. as well as one NCAA championship. There are also, surprisingly, numerous other women’s sports teams at UMD, including soccer, softball, volleyball, and lacrosse.

The Hare caught up with several other men to find out if anyone else knew about this rare sport. “I had no idea that women could even play sports,” said sophomore kinesiology major Chad Hazen. “Now it turns out that they’re actually way better at it than the guys are! Who knew? I’m definitely going to watch the tournament this year. I know Maryland’s out already, but have you heard of that Caitlin Clark girl? She’s crazy good.”

Sarah Jones, a girl, appeared to already know about women’s basketball. “I’ve been going to all their home games for years. I even got to attend the Big 10 Tournament this year. They’ve always been better than our men’s team, so I really don’t get why no one comes to the games. It would be so much more fun if they got as much attention as the men do. I guess it’s just another example of misogyny in the sporting world. I hope people finally start taking women athletes seriously.”

The women’s basketball team themselves could not be reached for comment, but we are sure they would also hope that more students attend their games next season.
